Which course is right for you?

Level 2

This two-day course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence.

It includes close quarters handling, high speed manoeuvres, man overboard recovery and collision regulations. View RYA online brochure here

Course content

Launching and recovery, boat handling, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside, man overboard

Self-sufficient powerboater in the right conditions, aware of own limitations and those of craft

Intermediate

This course covers the practical use of pilotage and passage planning by day on coastal waters using both traditional and electronic navigational techniques.

During the two days you also cover more advanced boat handling. It is recommended for anyone considering moving on to the Advanced course.

Assumed knowledge

Boat handling to the standard of the Level 2 course with a coastal endorsement.  Knowledge to the level of Day Skipper theory is recommended. It is strongly recommended that candidates hold a first aid certificate and a VHF/SRC operators certificate.

Safety Boat

This two-day course provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, or for racing or training activities.

It includes rescue techniques and elements of race management and mark laying.

Assumed knowledge

Basic understanding of sailing boats and windsurfers. An RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate must be held prior to this course and the student must be current and competent with that skill to the extent that boat handling is instinctive. Unsupervised continuation training is available prior to the course where students take a RIB out in order to hone their skills. This costs £20 per day. It is strongly recommended that candidates hold a first aid certificate and a VHF/SRC operator’s certificate.

Preparation, boat handling, dinghy rescue, windsurfer rescue, kayak or canoe rescue (can be covered as theory), towing, end-of-day procedures, safety, suitability of craft, local factors, communication, rescuing other water users

Able to provide safety or support cover to a range of craft, particularly sailing or windsurfing

SAFETY BOAT

Advanced 

This course is for leisure and professional boaters wanting to undertake more adventurous trips.

It includes navigation by day and night, weather and other aspects of skippering a small boat on more challenging passages in coastal waters.

Anybody undertaking this course must have the practical skills of the Intermediate course and knowledge of navigation to at least the standard of the Yachtmaster shore-based course.

Assumed knowledge

Candidates should be competent to the standard of the Intermediate Powerboat Certificate with navigation and chart-work to the level of Coastal Skipper/RYA Yachtmaster certificate. It is strongly recommended candidates hold a VHF/SRC operators certificate.

2 days including at least 1 night navigation exercise

Preparation for sea, boat handling, passage making and responsibility as skipper, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road, use of engines, emergency situations, night cruising

POWERBOAT INSTRUCTOR TRAINING

The Powerboat Instructor is a competent, experienced powerboater who has been trained to teach powerboating up to Level 2 und er the supervision of the Principal or Chief Instructor of a recognised centre.

EligibilityCandidates should have logged at least five seasons' experience of powerboating, preferably in a range of boat types and size s. For those who use powerboats as an integral part of their normal full-time occupation, this period is reduced to one season. Candidates will hold the RYA's Level 2 powerboat certificate, RYA Safe and Fun certificate and a valid RYA first aid certificate

Prior to the instructor training course, candidates must attend a skills assessment.

TrainingCandidates will attend a three-day instructor course run by an RYA Powerboat Trainer and assessed by an independent Trainer. The course will consist of: princip les of practical instruction, lesson planning, teaching styles, use of questioning, preparation and use of visual aids, assessment of students' learning, explanation and presentation of theory subjects, the structure of the scheme, planning progressive teaching sessions, preparation of boats and equipment, teaching methods to RYA Level 2.

ADVANCED POWERBOAT INSTRUCTOR TRAINING

Existing powerboat instructors wishing to teach the advanced course must hold that level of certificate themselves, gained by taking the two-day course.

The advanced instructor course lasts two days and the minimum age is 17.

It is run by an RYA Powerboat Trainer.

Existing powerboat instructors wishing to teach the Intermediate and Advanced courses must hold the RYA Safe and fun certificate, Advanced Course Completion Certificate, the Advanced Certificate of Competence and attend a two-day advanced instructor endorsement course.
Please note that if you will be teaching the advanced course on board a boat that is subject to the MCA's codes of practice, you should hold a commercially endorsed advanced powerboat certificate.
