Laser 2000 Euro cup at the British Mohnesee Sail Training Centre (BMSTC)
25th – 27th October
The British Mohnesee Sail Training Centre (BMSTC) has recently hosted the inaugural Laser 2000 Euro cup. This is one event of a series of 4 events held within Europe which make up the European cup. 20 teams made the trip to The BMSTC, 10 of which were service entries including boats from the Royal Navy and Scotland.
Day 1 bought pleasant October sunshine and a light breeze. LCpl Simon Horsfield (5 Rifles) and Mr Tom Bernal got off to a great start off the left hand end of the start line. and lead the fleet to the first mark. This was to be short lived as John Cox (Chichester Yacht Club) sailed well down the first run to take a commanding lead, undeterred Simon And Tom keep there focus and were rewarded for there efforts with a win. As the days racing progressed Horsfield and Bernal were in there element and took the remaining 2 races of the day. This gave the duo an overnight lead on 4 points. The BMSTC hosted a traditional German night where the Bratwursts, Paderborner larger and shots flowed all night.

Day 2 dawned and at last we had to some wind, 20 knots infact, the Race officer took the fleet some 3km away from the club towards Delecke. Light weights Simon and Tom had a fantastic start which immediately put them in the lead from there they had enough of a cushion to safely protect there lead. Sadly WO2 Johnny Johnston was hit on head by a faulty rudder part resulting in unavoidable retirement and trip to the local Kranken haus for some glue, worse still Johnny had to retire from the regatta due to his injury. The second race was full of drama LCpl Horsfield and Tom Bernal were holed after a big collision and forced to retire and get the gaffer tape out, what would the Army do with out a role of gaffer tape!. This left Andy Baldwin (Grafham Water S C) to lead the fleet home with the Royal Navy girls finishing 3rd.
The final race was a 14km race to the World Famous Mohnesee Dam and back. Thanks to Col J Sernberg for hosting the prize giving, this was followed by a Barbeque, live band. Thanks for everyone who helped make this a great event and the BMSTC look forward to hosting the Euro cup again in 2012.
