GENERAL

1. Following the approval of Kitesurfing as an Army ‘Recognised’ sport in Nov 11 (Ref A), all competitors selected to represent the Army are considered to be ‘On Duty’. As such Duty status is considered to be identical to any other authorized military activity (Ref C).

DETAIL

2. Ex GNARLY RUN 2012 is the Tri-Service Kitesurfing Championships. This is the last major competition of the season and is the culmination of a year’s training programme.

3. As an ASA Authorised Event, competitors are eligible to travel at public expense, as described at Ref D.

CO-ORD INSTRUCTIONS

4. Timings. The entire exercise period will be from 26 – 28 Oct 12.

5. Location. The location for the exercise is Westward Ho! Devon and RMB Chivenor

  • a. Competition will be at Westward Ho! and approval to use the venue has been received from all relevant civilian organisations.
  • b. Accommodation is provided at the RMB Chivenor Water Activity Centre, Braunton, Devon EX31 4AZ.

EXERCISING TROOPS / STAFF

6. Participating troops. A nominal roll of Exercising troops can be found at Annex A to this document.

SERVICE SUPPORT

7. Dress and Equipment. Dress and equipment requirements are as follows:

  • a. Dress will be appropriate sports kit to include swimwear, wetsuits, kitesurfing and safety equipment. Competitors will be expected to provide their own eqpt, however, pool eqpt may be avail if absolutely necessary. IMPORTANT – Attendees requiring pool eqpt are to inform Army POC (Lt Col Smyth) by 22 Oct 12.
  • b. Suitable civilian clothing is to be worn when not competing. As Army representatives, dress can be casual but should be in a reasonable state of repair!

8. Documentation. All personnel are to hold a MOD 90 (or chit in lieu),

9. Insurance. All attendees are to have their own personal kitesurfing insurance that includes 3rd party liability and competition insurance (via BKSA or similar).

10. Rations and Water. The accommodation is self catering. CILOR has not been applied for and competitors will be expected to fund their own meals during the event.

11. Medical. Medical support will be via the local civilian med chain. The closest General Hospital with A&E 24 hr cover is Barnstaple Devon. EX31 4JB (15 miles).

12. Safety. A risk assessment has been undertaken (by the RAF Kitesurfing Association – competition organiser) and mitigation action is in place. Competitors will be briefed prior to any events on specific safety aspects and all riders must adhere to the rules as briefed. Unsafe behaviour will not be acceptable and RTU and disciplinary action may be taken if necessary.

13. Transport. Competitors are responsible for making their own way to the event; however, personnel are eligible for transport at public expense as detailed in Ref D. Every effort is to be made to share transport where competitors are travelling from the same location.

14. Discipline. All competitors will be representing the Army and therefore discipline is to be of the highest standard throughout the Exercise. Lapses in discipline will be dealt with by immediate RTU and follow up through the Chain of Command.

15. Finance. Details TBC. Entry is expected to be covered by the ASA Kitesurfing Association, however, there may be a small charge for accommodation at RMB Chivenor.

SUMMARY
16. Ex GNARLY RUN 12 is the biggest event in the Army Kitesurfing calendar and needs to be fully supported if we are going to succeed in winning the Championships. Therefore, the respective chains of command are requested to release those individuals that have been selected to represent the Army in this prestigious event.
