Ex Canary Gold Leg 12-25 Feb 2012. The Kite Surf Expedition

Ex Canary Gold is a tri-service adventurous sail training expedition based in the Canary Islands. Leg 11 will be conducted in the normal manner will the addition of kite surfing as a secondary activity. The aim of the exercise is to develop individuals in both offshore sailing and kite surfing in an adventurous and demanding environment.
Leg 11 will be controlled by the REME yacht club, however it is still open to members of the tri-service community, provided they have suitable experience. A total of 10 pax will deploy on the expedition plus 1 skipper already located with the yacht.
The Ex OIC will provide the following key personnel:
a. 1x RYA coastal skipper (1st mate)
b. 2x RYA day skipper (watch leaders)
c. 1x IKO internation kitesurf instructor
d. 2x RYA powerboat operator
All participants with the exception of the skipper will have kite surf experience to an equivalent standard of IKO L2. They should be able to safely set up equipment, launch and waterstart. Course are available prior to the expedition if required, further detail from the Ex OIC.
Training
Participants who are total beginners may conduct an IKO beginner course prior to the Exped using the REME training partner, Xtremes Learn to Ride. Further details are available from the OIC.
During the Exped participants will gain considerable experience in offshore sailing with training provided by the RYA qualified personnel.
There will be an IKO instructor available during kite surfing phases to ensure safety and progression.
Transport
Participants will travel by air from England South to Lanzarote. Final flight details will be provided once all participants are confirmed.
Individuals will meet the cost of taxi to the marina in Lanzarote, apx 10 euro each.
Personnel
Duty Under Training. Participants are deemed to be on duty and under training. Participation whilst on leave is not permitted, although personnel may be asked to forgo leave.
Messing. The exercise will be rationed at public expense. Field conditions apply and unit food and accommodation charges should be abated according to individual service rules.
Separation Allowance/LSSA. LSSA is payable in accordance with the normal service rules of entitlement.
Nominal Roll. The nominal roll is at Annex A (by request).
Insurance
Personal Insurance and Assurance. Crewmembers are to satisfy themselves that they have correct and sufficient insurance and assurance cover for the exercise.
Travel and Kit Insurance. Crewmembers are advised to check that they have travel, medical and kit insurance to meet their personal requirements for the duration of the exercise. Neither the Project Officer nor OIC will accept responsibility for additional travel costs or arrangement arising from delayed departures or arrivals of transport, flights or yachts.
Equipment
Participants will be living aboard a Nicholson 55’ yacht, fully equipped to sustain the crew for the duration of the Exped.
It is anticipated the majority of participants will have their own kite equipment however the REME yacht club equipment is available as required. Personnel will be limited to one kite board and 2 kites per person. The OIC will co-ordinate to ensure a good range of equipment is deployed to cope with a variety of wind conditions.
Uniform is not required for this exercise. Civilian sailing clothes and kit as detailed at Annex B will be required on exercise and during the periods of travel to and from the airport or seaport of departure. Good quality, breathable foul weather clothing and sailing wellies are provided on the yacht. All participants will require a suitable wetsuit.
Finance
The overall cost to individual is £450 before any grants have been applied. Grants will be on a case by case basis dependant on capbadge however the actual cost to individual is anticipated to be in the region of £250-350. The cost is inclusive of flights and food, but not transport to the airport. A deposit of £200 is to be paid by 31 Oct 11, with the remainder 8 weeks prior to departure.
Medical
Medical Fitness. Crew members must be medically fit before embarking on the exercise. Advice on vaccination requirements should be sought from medical centres. Crew taking medications are to inform the Skipper on joining their yacht. Medical incidents requiring treatment beyond the capabilities of the yacht will be designated a medical emergency and will be admissible at public expense. Crew members are advised to obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) - replaces the E111, which entitles you to reduced-cost, sometimes free, medical treatment that becomes necessary while you’re in a European Economic Area (EEA). Command. Command of the crew and yacht is the responsibility of the Skipper nominated by JSASTC.
Control. Control of Ex CANARY GOLD is the responsibility of JSASTC, however, recruitment of crews, crew liaison and management of overseas travel is the responsibility of the OIC.
Communications
The Ex OIC will be responsible for all co-ordination and key administration prior to the Ex.

Summary
This is the first expedition of its type in the Tri-service community and combines demanding offshore sailing with the fastest growing watersport in the world. It will open the opportunity to explore some of the more remote locations in the Canary Islands and is intended to gain wide exposure across the Forces sailing community raising the profile of both activities.
