Army Offshore Regatta showing yachts racing

The AOR took place in the Solent and coastal waters between 14- 18 May 2012. There were three classes: Victoria 34, IRC and Cruising.

The 2012 Army Offshore sailing regatta has been taking place this week, centred around the Isle of Wight.

Each of the 25 boats represents a Corps of the British Army and, with more than 140 soldiers involved, the turnout is equally impressive.

Over the past few days the fleet of IRC, Victoria and cruiser-class boats have had a variety of races, including a night event and a race round the Isle of Wight.

Forces News caught up with them in the final Windward and Leaward races, centred on the Hillhead plateau, in the Solent. Crews had to navigate a series of buoys - testing their tacking and turning abilities.

Some of the crew of one of the boats - Fusilier - had extra challenges. With support from ABF The Soldiers' Charity it has embraced the "Out On A Limb" initiative, giving injured servicemen and their families the chance not only to sail, but also to reach a high enough standard of seamanship to teach others.

By the end of the week Corps bragging rights belonged to the Royal Engineers in the Victoria Class, closely followed by the Adjutant General's Corps. In the larger IRC Class the RLC are number 1, with the Royal Armoured Corps second.

Next up for the fleet is the Services Offshore Regatta next month, which will be the last event out of Weymouth before the Olympics.
