Day Skipper

The Day Skipper Course is conducted on board a cruising yacht (7 to 15m LOA), to teach pilotage, navigation, seamanship and boat handling up to the standard required to skipper a small cruising yacht safely by day in tidal waters with which the student is familiar.

Coastal Skipper

The aim of this course is to teach the skills and techniques required to skipper a cruising yacht (7 – 15m LOA), safely on coastal and offshore passages by day and night.

Yachtmaster Beat-Up Course

This is the ultimate qualification for most boat users.  It can be used to support a Commercial Ticket, or simply used as confirmation of a level of personal achievement.  The days will be long and packed with theoretical as well as practical situations which need to be overcome.

Assumed knowledge

Sea time – 50 days, 5 days as skipper, 2500 miles, at least 5 passages over 60 miles, acting as skipper for at least two of these passages and including two of which have involved overnight passages.  Five days experience as skipper.  At least half the qualifying sea time must have been accrued in tidal waters.
A valid First Aid Certificate.

A VHF/SRC Certificate (or higher).

Candidates knowledge needs to be at the level of the RYA Yachtmaster Shorebased Theory Course

Minimum duration

There is no set duration for a Yachtmaster Preparation course and the length of the course will vary according to your current level of preparation and knowledge.  6 Days are normally set aside which includes the final moderation

Course content

The Yachtmaster Offshore preparation course runs over four days and focusses on checking that your skills are at the right level and then spends time practicing the core skills and improving them where necessary. Time is also spent addressing the structure of the impending exam.

Ability after the course

Passing the Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence (‘the examination’) means that you are considered competent “to skipper a motor cruiser on any passage during which the yacht is no more than 150 miles from harbour”

Yachtmaster Beat-Up Course

Shorebased Course

RYA First Aid

Our one-day course covers all the usual first aid subjects, but from a boating perspective.  It is aimed at anyone who goes afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, and estuaries or on cross channel passages.

In a medical emergency a little First Aid knowledge and immediate action can save lives, especially in remote locations.  This one-day course is designed to provide a working knowledge of First Aid for people using small craft and to support skippers.  It fulfils the requirements for:

  • Professional skippers of small craft working within 60 miles of a safe haven, including Boatmasters;

  • The Senior First Aid certificate needed by offshore racers subject to ISAF's regulations on First Aid training (OSR 4.08.4).

The course is recommended by the MCA and HSE.

The subjects specific to boating include:

  • the recovery position in a confined space

  • CPR, including the drowning protocol                                            

  • cold shock and hypothermia from immersion and/or exposure      

  • medical assistance or advice by VHF

  • helicopter rescue

  • seasickness and dehydration

  • medical assistance or advice by VHF

Shorebased Course

World Sailing Offshore Safety Course

The one day World Sailing Offshore Safety course teaches the skipper and crew all the skills needed to deal with an emergency whilst sailing in an offshore environment.

The World Sailing OffshoreSafety certificate provides the holder with the knowledge of safe sailing techniques and how to minimize risks in order to confidently sail outside the limits of inshore waters.  It serves as a valuable consolidation of personal and crew safety procedures.

The certificate confirms crew eligibility under the World Sailing OffshoreSpecial Regulations, Section 6.01, when participating in Cat 0, 1 and some Cat 2 offshore races (including the Rolex Fastnet Race).  The one day course is run in conjunction with the Sea Survival Course; both of which are required to obtain the ISAF Safety Certificate.  Holders of an in-date Sea Survival Certificate need only attend the World Sailing Offshore Safety Course however they need to be aware that once the Sea Survival Course becomes 5 yrs old, the Safety Certificate is no longer valid. The cost of both the Sea Survival and World Sailing Offshore course, when booked together, is £70.

Cruising Instructor Courses

The RYA Cruising Instructors Course is a 5 day course run by the AOSC, using one of the Regt’l/Corps yachts.  The cost is £40 payable to the ASA.  Candidates for the course must be a Commercially Endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore and both an ASA and an RYA member. 

The course will be held at Gosport and will instruct and assess candidates on their suitability to be RYA Cruising Instructors and be able to instruct on and qualify RYA Competent Crew and Day Skipper Courses.  Candidates must have a high standard of personal seamanship both theory and practical and will be expected to teach all aspects of the Competent Crew and Day Skipper syllabus as given in the RYA Book G158 (Syllabus and Logbook).

Yachtmaster Instructor Courses

The RYA Yachtmaster Instructors Course is a 5 day course run by the RYA, using one of the Regt’l/Corps yachts.  The final day will be a moderation day, by a second Yachtmaster Instructor Trainer.  Details of the cost can be obtained from the Chief Instructor, AOSC.  Candidates for the course must be a Commercially Endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore and hold a Cruising Instructor Certificate.  In addition, they must be both an ASA and an RYA member.

The course will be held at Gosport and will instruct and assess candidates on their suitability to be RYA Yachtmaster Instructors.  The successful individuals will be able to instruct on and qualify up to the standard of the RYA Coastal Skipper course.  Candidates must have a high standard of personal seamanship both theory and practical and will be expected to teach all aspects of any part of the RYA syllabus as given in the RYA Book G158 (Syllabus and Logbook).

This course is for powerboat users wanting to undertake more adventurous trips by day and night.  It includes navigation at planing speed, weather and other aspects of skippering powerboats on more challenging passages in coastal waters.

Assumed Knowledge

Candidates should be competent to the standard of the Intermediate Powerboat Certificate with a thorough knowledge of the navigation and chartwork to the level of Coastal Skipper/RYA Yachtmaster Shorebased certificate.  It is strongly recommended that candidates hold a first aid certificate and a VHF operators certificate.
