Renesse 2013
NORTH WEST EUROPE OPEN WINDSURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS

RENESSE HOLLAND 26th – 30th August 2013

The annual trip to Renesse this year was made over the weekend of the 25th Aug. The event is one of the best events of the ASA Windsurfing calendar as highly competitive racing during the day is combined with a full on social program in the evenings, this year was the last time that WO2 Steve Myers would be organising and acting as Race Officer as he is leaving the Army next year. Steve has run this event for the last 15 years and has been the back bone in organisation and coordination during the week.

Despite the lower than normal entry list of around 10 sailors plus families the week was shaping up nicely with hot and sunny weather forecast all week and moderate winds. The competition format for the week revolves around course racing, slalom, master blaster and long distance with an added freestyle event normally run either in planning conditions or light winds.

We had two fleets this year comprising of an open fleet a novice fleet. Due to the light to moderate conditions on Monday the course racing was completed in around 12 knots with 4 races in total being run.

In the Open Fleet Simon White (AAC) cleaned up with 4 straight wins using his 10.8m sail and formula board, a good start to the week. 2nd place went to Col Dave Hinsley (AMS) and 3rd Maj Mark Collins (RE). In the Novice fleet Laura Jurgens sailed consistently well over the four races to take 1st place, Kyle Walsh (Guards) achieved 2nd. Due to light winds no racing was completed on Tuesday which started to put a bit of pressure on the race officers as Wednesday was now looking to be the only day of wind for the rest of the week, this meant that all the other planning disciplines would need to be done in a day. No pressure then!

The wind gods were shining on Wednesday as we had North Westerly winds ranging from 12 knots to 17 knots. We opted to run the days racing on the open sea side as the direction was more suited to across wind racing. The boat was launched and a master blaster course was laid in the morning. A total of 4 master blaster races were run again with Simon White and Dave Hinsley sharing two first places and two second places. Capt Colin Jurgens (AAC) scored four third places taking him into third place overall, which rounded up the open fleet. The novices again were smashing it up with Kyle Walsh sailing well on his free ride equipment to take 1st place overall and Laura again sailing well to pick up 2nd place, Aaron Hickman (RE) who has progressed massively over this seasons racing sailed into 3rd . In the afternoon as the wind was still good but had dropped a little so we decided to try run the long distance which is basically a one lap around a buoy which is set about 4 - 6 miles out to sea. Kit choice was crucial as the wind had moderated a little so some of the fleet opted for the big guns 10.8m sails and formula boards which proved to be right as only 7 out of the 10 sailors completed the course.
Dave Hinsley took the win closely followed by Simon White and Colin Jurgens.

Some stars of the weekSo after the completion of the course racing / master blaster and long distance we had an overall result which gave us the option to run the freestyle on the Thursday. As forecast the Thursday delivered light winds so not enough to do the slalom or any more planning racing.

We had 6 budding light wind freestylers who were split into two ten minute heats where they were judged on an overall impression. Two sailors from each heat would proceed into the final.

Again equipment choice was crucial as the wind was around 8 – 10 knots. Loads of sail trickery and spinning was performed and it came down to Laura Jurgens and Kyle Walsh who both sailed well through their heats and final. It was Laura who came out as the winner with some non planning forward loop attempts which gave her the edge and first place in the freestyle.

So that was the end of the racing and competition for the week due to again light winds forecast for Friday.
Prize giving and the annual social get together was held at one the beach bars near the browersdam, a special presentation was given to WO2 Steve Myers and he was publicly thanked for all his efforts over the years. So all in all a great week, the wind was a bit light but another successful Army Windsurfing event lets hope we get a few more entering in 2014.

Next years event will still go ahead as planned for the last weekend in Aug. Dates to follow.
